Which lacing for what?
Elastic lacing at the front is the most common form: a short laced section over the instep with elastic gives the ankle freedom of movement. That is the choice for jumping and for anyone who wants a boot that does not sit stiffly on the leg. On a dressage boot it is more of a decorative and fit aid.
Polo lacing runs over the whole front of the shaft. You adjust the calf width yourself – ideal for strong or very slim calves and for boots that have to switch between winter and summer breeches.
Derby lacing sits only in the midfoot like a lace-up shoe and gives the boot a sporty look. It is usually decorative and barely changes the fit.
For the show, lace-up boots are common in dressage and jumping. If you want something classic, choose a smooth shaft with lacing only at the instep – you will also find that under Ladies' riding boots.
Not only. Elastic lacing at the front gives the ankle freedom of movement – you notice that especially when jumping and in a light seat. Full polo lacing adjusts the calf width. Only derby lacing in the midfoot is usually purely visual.
Classic for jumping, because the shaft is more flexible. By now many dressage boots also have short elastic lacing at the instep without the shaft losing stability. For dressage the bow should be high and the shaft firm – the lacing is then incidental.

With elastic lacing, no – the boot is put on and taken off via the zip at the back. You loosen polo lacing once when first fitting it to the calf and then leave it as it sits.
No. Lace-up boots are common in jumping and dressage classes and are considered classic. What matters is a well-groomed overall look – clean laces in the boot colour and a smoothly fitting shaft.
Fit, laces & care
With lace-up boots you try the fit with loose lacing: the boot must sit on the heel even without a tight pull – the lacing is fine-tuning, not a substitute for the right calf width. How to measure foot size, calf and calf height is in our riding boot size guide.
Elastic laces stretch over time and can be replaced individually – you will find matching lengths and colours in boot accessories. When cleaning, open the lacing so that sand and sweat under the tongue do not attack the leather, and keep the eyelets dry, otherwise metal eyelets will rust.
