Technical innovations

How are riding helmets constructed?

Riding helmets usually consist of a plastic outer shell and a polystyrene inner shell. Many high-quality riding helmets are also reinforced with a layer of carbon or polycarbonate to increase the protective effect. The inner shell made of polystyrene or EPS is protected by an inlay. This padding, which is often removable, absorbs perspiration and thus protects the inner shell. If the inlay can be removed, it can be easily cleaned by hand or in the washing machine.

Three different technologies:

  • Inmould technology: the inner layer is inseparably bonded to the outer layer. Lightweight construction with maximum impact resistance.
  • Hard shell technology: separate construction of inner and outer shell. Better integration of ventilation openings and air channels = greater breathability
  • Hybrid technology: combines previous technologies. Very low helmet weight.

All three technologies effectively protect your head in the event of a riding accident and save your life in case of doubt.

When should the riding helmet be replaced? Can you still ride with a helmet after a riding accident or fall?

There are the following reasons for replacing a riding helmet:

  • Fall on hard ground, e.g. from the rail or from the cupboard, as small micro-cracks in the shell can impair the protective function.
  • After 5 to 7 years, depending on the manufacturer's instructions.
  • After a fall.

Some manufacturers offer an inspection of the riding helmet after a fall.

Buying a second-hand riding helmet?

Used riding helmets are not a particularly good idea. You never know for sure whether the protective effect is still there. Perhaps the helmet has already been involved in a riding accident or fall, which you can't always tell by looking at the helmet.

The padding may also have suffered. In most cases, the inlay can be replaced, but the foam may also have been affected by dirt and sweat. For hygienic reasons alone, it is therefore advisable to buy your own helmet.

How to measure the riding helmet and find the right size

The easiest way is to try it on. The helmet should not slip off if you wobble or nod your head a lot. It should also not pinch anywhere.

Simply measure it when buying online:

  • Take a tape measure and place it around your head at the widest point.
  • Position: approximately just above the ears and at the centre of the forehead.
  • Compare the measured value with the manufacturer's measurement table.
