Which headcollar suits your horse?
A headcollar should sit securely, not rub and suit what you have planned: field, stable, groundwork or transport. The main differences lie in size, material and padding.
Types of headcollar at a glance
- Nylon headcollars: they are robust, easy to care for and available in many colours. Many models can be adjusted at the headpiece and noseband.
- Leather headcollars: they have a classic look and need a little more care. They are popular as stable or show headcollars. There are also anatomically shaped models.
- Headcollars with sheepskin or faux fur: on these headcollars the noseband and headpiece are padded so that there is less rubbing at sensitive points. Travel headcollars are often covered with fur all round.
- Rope halters: rope halters for groundwork. They act on specific points via knots. A horse should not be tied up in a rope halter.
- Safety headcollars: models with an element designed to release or break under strong pull, for example an elastic or breakaway part. How the element works is stated on the item.
- Foal and yearling headcollars: smaller headcollars, usually with soft padding, that are easy to adjust.
- Field headcollars and headcollars with fly fringes: models for the paddock, some with fringes against flies.
Sizes: from Mini-Shetty to Warmblut Extra
In the size filter you will find Falabella, Mini-Shetty, Shetty, Pony, Cob, Warmblut and Warmblut Extra, as well as foal sizes and some sizes in centimetres. The names are only a guide: a cob headcollar can come up differently from two manufacturers. So compare the measurements on the item with your horse's head, ideally with a headcollar that already fits well. How the headcollar should fit
- The noseband sits about two fingers' width below the cheekbone and does not slip onto the soft part of the nose.
- As a rule, about two fingers fit between the noseband and the nasal bone.
- The headpiece does not press on the ears, and the throatlatch leaves enough room for chewing and flexing.
- A headcollar that is too loose can slip or get caught; one that is too tight will rub.
Safety when tying up and in the field
For tying up, many riders use a lead rope with a panic snap. The snap can be opened even when the horse is pulling on the rope. Lead ropes and panic snaps can be found under Lead ropes. Opinions differ on whether a horse should wear a headcollar in the field or stable. If so, a safety headcollar is one option. Check the fit regularly and do not leave your horse unattended in a headcollar if it could get caught somewhere. No headcollar rules out injuries.
Headcollars with lead rope and accessories
Some models are available as a set with a matching lead rope, for example rope halters or headcollars with a tie-up rope. What is included is stated on the item. Care
Nylon headcollars can be washed out according to the manufacturer's instructions. Clean leather regularly and care for it with a suitable leather care product. Brush out fur padding and wash it according to the label. Check buckles, seams and safety elements regularly for wear.

That depends on your horse's head, not just on its breed or height. As a rough guide: Shetty and Mini-Shetty for the smallest ponies, Pony for small horses, Cob for small to medium-sized horses with a rather short head, Warmblood for large horses, Warmblood Extra for particularly large heads. Because manufacturers cut differently, compare the measurements on the product with a headcollar that already fits your horse.

Nylon is hard-wearing, easy to care for and available in many colours. Leather looks classic and needs regular care. Headcollars with lambskin or faux fur padding can be more comfortable for sensitive skin or after clipping. Which material is right depends on how you use it, your horse's skin and your preferences.
A panic hook is a clip on the lead rope that can be opened even under tension. That is why it is often used for tying up. It does not replace supervision or a safe tie-up area. Ropes with panic hooks can be found in the Lead ropes category.
