Quarter sheet, exercise sheet or horse walker rug: which one when?

The three types of rug differ in cut, not in purpose: all of them keep your horse warm while moving without full work, and all of them stay on while you ride or lead.

• Quarter sheets and exercise sheets sit under or behind the saddle. They have a saddle cut-out and close at the front by the withers with Velcro. Use: warming up in winter, walking phases, hacks in wind and rain, clipped horses after work. At Eskadron they come in softshell with fleece lining, with a 1680 denier outer fabric and faux fur underside (Heritage), or as the Lunge & Exercise, which converts from an exercise sheet to a lunging rug with a zip.
• Horse walker rug (DELTA): no saddle cut-out, with a stretchy front section that moves with your horse in the walker and helps prevent rubbing, plus cross surcingles and a safety tail cord. Available with fleece lining and no fill, or with 50, 150 or 300 g thermal fill, depending on the temperature.

Waterproofing: the Oxford models have a 3,000 mm waterproof rating, the Heritage Faux Fur 5,000 mm. Softshell is highly water-repellent but not designed for persistent rain. All models are breathable so your horse doesn't get wet under the rug.

Size, fill and care for Eskadron exercise sheets

The sizes are based on your horse's cooler size: S/M corresponds to a back length of 125 to 135 cm, L/XL to 145 to 155 cm. The rug itself is shorter because it only starts behind the saddle (Lunge & Exercise 105 or 120 cm, DELTA horse walker rug 130 or 150 cm). Rule of thumb: if your horse wears a 125 or 135 cooler, choose S/M; for 145 or 155, choose L/XL. The full Eskadron size chart with measuring instructions is on the coolers page.

Fill by use

• Fleece lining without fill: spring and autumn, warming up from about 10 °C.
• 50 g: autumn and mild winter weather, unclipped horses.
• 150 g: winter, clipped horses on the horse walker.
• 300 g: frost, long walking phases, sensitive or older horses.

Care

Wash Oxford and softshell rugs at 30 °C without fabric softener, close the Velcro, don't tumble dry. Air-dry faux fur and shake it out. The waterproofing lasts longer if you hang the rug up after rain instead of folding it.
