When a jumper, when a sweatshirt?
The two terms overlap in the equestrian range. Classic jumpers (often finer or with a roll neck) look a little smarter; sweatshirts and hoodies are casual, often with a hood or zip, and are suitable for yard work and leisure. Sweat jackets can be opened quickly if you get warm on the horse. Which style you need depends on the temperature, discipline and whether you want to wear a functional shirt underneath.
Layering in autumn and winter
Many riders combine a functional shirt, a jumper or hoodie and on top a riding jacket or winter jacket. This way you can take off layers without getting cold straight away. For very cold days, add riding gilets and accessories such as hats, headbands and scarves. Tips for the cold season: Riding in winter.
Fit and size
The jumper should fit the torso without bunching under the girth strap or body protector. Sleeves must not slide over your hands when you take up the reins. Use the brand's size chart; between slim and relaxed fit, comfort and whether you wear another layer underneath decide. Check the shape after washing – elastane and sweat qualities can shrink differently.
Material and care
Cotton sweat, blended fabrics and fleece-like qualities are common. Wash according to the care label, ideally inside out and not too hot; secure hood and drawstrings before spinning. Do not dry fleece and thick sweats on the radiator, otherwise they lose their shape. Pre-treat heavy yard dirt locally.
Training, leisure and look
For riding, models without bulky appliqués on the forearm and with sleeves that stay under the jacket are suitable. For the yard and leisure, hoodies and sweat jackets (in the listing e.g. Athleisure, Selection or Avenna models) are practical. Glitter or sparkle versions are a matter of taste – often choose something more subtle for shows and something bolder for training and the way to the yard.

One that is not bulky under the jacket, keeps sleeves and hem in place and does not restrict you. Sweat or light knit depending on the temperature.
Often a functional shirt plus a jumper or hoodie. In the cold, a winter jacket or gilet on top – layers can be adjusted on the go.
Many are, as long as the hood and drawstrings do not get in the way. For jumping or windy terrain, secure the hood or choose a model without a hood.
Using the brand's size chart and, if necessary, chest or width measurements. Read the fit description on the item rather than simply taking one size larger.
No. Thinner sweaters also work in spring or in a cold indoor arena; thick models and sweat jackets mainly in the cold season.
Pikeur, Samshield, LeMieux, Eskadron, Imperial Riding, Euro-Star, QHP and Equestro, among others – see the manufacturer filter in the listing.
