Equipment for Shetlands and mini Shetlands

Shetlands and mini Shetlands need equipment that suits their small, often sturdy head and body. Normal pony sizes are usually too big. In this category we have collected items that are available in Shetty, Mini-Shetty or Falabella size. Please note: Lepona is an equestrian shop. We sell accessories for your Shetland, but not animals. If you would like to buy a Shetland, please contact breeders, breed societies or reputable agencies.

What you will find here

  • Headcollars and leading: nylon, perlon, leather and rope halters in small sizes, plus lead ropes. You will find more models under Headcollars and Lead ropes.
  • Bridles, reins and browbands: Shetland bridles, including bitless models, matching reins and browbands. You will find the full range under Bridles.
  • Fly protection: fly masks with and without ears as well as fly veils. There is more under Fly masks and Fly veils.
  • Leg protection: horse boots and brushing boots in Shetty size, more models under Horse boots.
  • Saddle and lunging accessories: Shetland saddle pads, individual bareback pads as well as lunging rollers, side reins and other lunging accessories. You will find more saddle pads under Saddle pads.

Sizes: Falabella, Mini-Shetty, Shetty

In the size filter you will find Falabella, Mini-Shetty, Shetty and occasionally Pony. Mini Shetlands are the smaller variety of the Shetland pony; the exact height limits are set by the breed societies. For equipment, however, height is only a rough guide. What matters are your animal's measurements. Every manufacturer cuts slightly differently. So compare the measurements on the product with your Shetland.

Checking the fit

  • Headcollar: The noseband should not slip onto the soft part of the nose or rub on the cheekbone. There should still be room for about two fingers between the strap and the head.
  • Bridle: The browband and headpiece must not press on the ears; the bit should match the width of the mouth.
  • Horse boots and fly masks: They should not slip or constrict, and the eyes must stay clear.

Shetlands often have a strong neck and thick coat. A headcollar or mask that fits in summer may sit tighter with a winter coat. So check the fit regularly.

Fly protection and grazing time

Fly masks are the largest product group in this category. There are models with and without ear protection, some with nose protection or fringes. For Shetlands, the mask is often a compromise between good protection and a clear view, because the head is small and the mane is thick. Make sure the mask does not touch the eyes, does not slip and can be removed easily if necessary. Check the fit regularly during grazing time.

Winter rugs for Shetlands

Many Shetlands grow a thick winter coat. Whether your Shetland needs a rug depends, for example, on whether it is clipped, old or sick and how it is kept. If in doubt, talk to your vet. Rugs in small sizes can be found under Turnout rugs and Coolers. The size filter there starts at 60 cm. How the rug size is measured is explained in the manufacturer's size chart.

Manufacturers

Shetland equipment in the shop is available from QHP, Waldhausen, Q-essentials, BR, Eskadron, Kavalkade, Kentucky Horsewear and STAR, among others. Use the manufacturer filter to quickly find your favourite brand.

No. Lepona is an equestrian shop and does not sell animals. The shop offers the sizes Falabella, Mini-Shetty, Shetty and occasionally Pony. The names are only a guide, as every manufacturer cuts slightly differently. Compare the measurements on the product with those of your animal. We are happy to advise you.

The noseband should not slip onto the soft part of the nose or rub on the cheekbone. As a rule, about two fingers should fit between the strap and the head. The headpiece should not press on the ears. As the winter coat can add bulk, you should check the fit regularly.

Not necessarily. Many Shetlands grow a thick winter coat. A rug can make sense for clipped, old or sick animals, for example. If in doubt, talk to your vet. Rugs in small sizes can be found in the Turnout rugs category.

Usually not. Pony bridles are too big for most Shetlands. Choose bridles in Shetty or Mini-Shetty size and compare the measurements on the product. The bit and browband should also suit the size of the head.

For the smallest sizes, the shop mainly offers headcollars, bridles, fly protection and individual accessories. Filter by size "Mini-Shetty" or "Falabella". The selection is smaller than for Shetty sizes.
