When is a horse walker rug useful?
In the transitional season and in winter, many yards use the horse walker between training sessions. Without a rug, a clipped or sensitive horse quickly gets cold, especially in wind and rain. A suitable walker rug keeps the body warm without restricting movement in the walker.
Waterproof or fleece?
Waterproof horse walker rugs are suitable for rainy days and windy outdoor walkers. Fleece or lightly lined rugs keep warm and are often more breathable, but do not protect against rain for long. Reflective details help at dusk. Which version suits depends on the walker (indoor/outdoor), the weather and whether your horse is clipped.
Fill and warmth
In the listing you will find unlined models and rugs with light to warm fill (product names include 50 g, 100 g, 160 g, 200 g or 400 g). The gram weight is a guide, not a fixed temperature rule. Watch whether your horse sweats or feels cold under the rug, and change the model if necessary.
Fit
The rug should leave the withers and shoulder free to move, should not slip, and the belly strap and tail cord should sit securely. Sizes often follow pony/cob/full or centimetres – compare the manufacturer's chart.
How it differs
For riding with a saddle you need an exercise sheet or quarter sheet. Turnout rugs are intended for field and paddock, stable rugs for the stable. After training, a sweat rug helps the coat dry. Overview: horse rugs. More on the cold season: Riding in winter.
A rug for the horse walker. It has no saddle cut-out and is meant to keep your horse warm, and dry if needed, while it moves without a rider. It is often also called a walker sheet.
If the walker is outdoors or it is raining, yes. In a covered walker a lighter or fleece version is often enough. Check the product description for weather protection.
That depends on the temperature, coat and clip. Unlined and light fills are suitable for mild days, higher gram weights for cold days and clipped horses. Check regularly whether your horse is at a comfortable temperature under the rug.
Some turnout rugs can be used for this, but they are often cut for field and paddock. Dedicated horse walker rugs are designed for the movement in the walker. If in doubt, choose the model intended for the walker.
The exercise sheet has a saddle cut-out and goes behind the saddle. The horse walker rug covers the body without a cut-out and is used without a saddle.
Remove dirt and hair, close the fastenings and wash according to the manufacturer's instructions. The rug should be completely dry before its next use.
