Protection for the hind leg

Fetlock caps

Fetlock boots are much shorter than gaiters. They are used to protect against injuries caused by brushing (when the horse's fetlock joints touch during movement).

Various strops for different requirements

Simple moulded caps:

  • consists of a hard plastic shell
  • comprehensive neoprene fabric with Velcro fastener
  • Inexpensive version with a wide range of colours

Closed fetlock boots:

  • not only protect the inside of the fetlock head, but cover the entire fetlock head, similar to a gaiter
  • Often made of plastic and neoprene or leather
  • Good for off-road riding if you sometimes ride your horse through vegetation

Fetlock boots with fur:

  • with a fur edge, or a complete fur lining
  • made from lambskin or artificial fur
  • prevents chafing

Putting on fetlock boots correctly

The fetlock boot should fit snugly, similar to gaiters, but should not constrict. Fasten the caps properly on the outside. If the fasteners were on the inside, the fasteners could get caught and open. Make sure to close the fetlock boot firmly, but not with force.

If you have chosen an anatomical fetlock boot, the shape must fit snugly around the fetlock head. The carpal joint must remain free to ensure unrestricted movement. An easy way to apply the fetlock boot is to place it on the leg slightly above the fetlock head. Now slowly slide the fetlock boot down onto the fetlock head until it fits snugly in the correct place.
