The intelligent choice
Turnout rugs for field and paddock
Turnout rugs make up the largest part of the Bucas range. They are waterproof and breathable and differ mainly in outer material, lining and fill weight.
- Power Turnout: outer made of ballistic nylon, heat-reflecting aluminium inner coating, Stay-Dry lining and Click'n Go front closure. Thanks to the Stay-Dry lining, Bucas says the rug can be put on a horse that is still damp, like a cooler. Available in the shop as 0 g, Medium 150 g, Extra 300 g and as Big Neck.
- Smartex Rain: nylon shell with a waterproof, breathable coating, Stay-Dry lining and the patented Click'n Go buckle with magnetic snap closure. According to Bucas, the entire Smartex range can go on a wet horse after training or washing.
- Atlantic Turnout: ballistic nylon outside, Silky-Dermo-Care lining inside, with 50 g or 200 g fill.
- Irish Turnout: rip-stop outer, Silk-Feel lining and shoulder pleats for more freedom of movement. Available as Light with 50 g, with 150 g and as Extra with 300 g; the Irish Combi Neck is sold separately.
- Freedom Turnout: the good-value model with rip-stop outer, Silk-Feel lining and internal cross surcingles. Available in the shop as Light with 0 g, with 50 g and 150 g and as High Neck.
- The IVR Turnout with 0, 100 or 200 g, the X-Range Turnout Light with an extra-long cut as a transitional rug and the lightweight Sun-Shower rain sheet without fill complete the range.
You will find turnout rugs from other brands under Turnout rugs.
Liners and quilts: combining rugs
Instead of buying a separate rug for every temperature, Bucas lets you layer. The Liner with 100, 200 or 300 g fill goes under any Bucas turnout or stable rug with front and rear attachment points and makes it warmer. You can use the 150 g Quilts on their own as a stable rug or as an extra layer under a Bucas rug, with either Silk-Feel or Stay-Dry lining. More models are available under Under rugs and Stable rugs.
Neck covers and accessories
Many Bucas rugs have attachment points for a separate neck cover. The Irish Combi Neck is fleece-lined and fits all Bucas rugs without a high neck; the Atlantic Combi Neck fits the Atlantic Turnout and all Bucas rugs with Combi Neck attachment points. For Power, Smartex and Atlantic turnouts there is the Click Go Magnetic rug extension for more room at the chest. With the Bucas Rug Conditioner you can restore the water-repellent properties of your turnout rug. Spray it only on the outside of the clean rug and only in well-ventilated rooms. You will find more parts under Neck covers and chest expanders and Rug accessories.
Before and after training
For work around riding there are the Competition Cooler made of Stay-Dry fabric and fine mesh, the Power Cooler for use as a cooler, travel, show or stable rug, and the Shamrock Power multi-purpose rug. The Quarter exercise sheet is light, waterproof and breathable and attaches to the saddle with a hook-and-loop tab. More under Coolers and Exercise sheets. The Bucas Therapy series includes the Therapy Cooler, a Therapy turnout rug and the Therapie Walker horse walker rug. A fine stainless steel mesh is worked into the material; according to Bucas, these are not magnetic rugs. The manufacturer's notes on how long to use them can be found with each item, and more rugs for the horse walker under Horse walker rugs.
Fly protection for the summer
In summer, Bucas is best known for its Buzz-Off line: fly rugs and fly masks made of fine-mesh, lightweight fabric, some in a zebra pattern. The Buzz-off Rain combines a fly rug with a waterproof back panel. There are also the fly rug and fly mask from the Freedom series. More under Fly rugs and Fly masks.
How to find the right Bucas rug
First measure your horse's back length, then choose the series according to how your horse is kept and the weather. For the field you need a waterproof turnout rug; in the stable a stable rug or a quilt is enough. How warm the rug should be depends mainly on whether your horse is clipped, how thick its winter coat is and how wet and windy it is outside. At first, check with your hand under the rug at the shoulder and chest whether your horse is sweating or cold. Everything about rugging can be found in the overview Horse rugs and in the guide Riding in winter.
That depends on the weather, how your horse is kept and its coat. The Power Turnout is the most robust series, with ballistic nylon and an aluminium inner coating; Irish and Freedom Turnout are the more affordable series with rip-stop outer material. Our Bucas guide explains the differences.
That is the fill weight. 0 g protects against rain and wind without adding warmth, 150 g is a medium fill, and 300 g is the warm Extra version for cold days.
With rugs that have a Stay-Dry lining, yes, for example the Power Turnout and the Smartex. According to Bucas, the lining wicks moisture to the outside.
The liner with 100, 200 or 300 g goes under a Bucas turnout or stable rug with front and rear attachment points and makes it warmer. You can use the quilt on its own as a stable rug or as an extra layer under a Bucas rug.
The Irish Combi Neck fits all Bucas rugs without a high neck, the Atlantic Combi Neck fits the Atlantic Turnout and all Bucas rugs with Combi Neck attachment points. Whether a rug has attachment points is stated with the item.
Clean the rug according to the manufacturer's instructions. The Bucas Rug Conditioner restores the water-repellent properties. Spray it only on the outside of the clean rug and only in well-ventilated rooms.
