Description
Sweet Iron bits are known for mouthpieces that have a sweet taste. The bits are anatomically shaped and are available in many types and sizes.
This single-jointed full cheek snaffle contains rings made of solid stainless steel and a mouthpiece of mild steel combined with a Sweet Iron layer on the mouthpiece (blue). Saliva production is further encouraged by the Sweet Iron layer on the mouthpiece. When this material reacts with moisture, warmth and air it oxidises and develops a sweet-tasting surface rust. Eventually the blue colour disappears, but the taste of the surface rust remains. The mouthpiece is 14 mm thick and the bit rings have a diameter of 65 mm.
The anatomic shape follows the form of the horse's mouth, which enables gentle and even pressure distribution. The single jointed bit works mainly on the bars but also exerts pressure on the edges of the tongue, the corners of the mouth and sometimes on the palate. When rein aids are given, the bit forms a V-shape. Due to the single joint, the tongue has more freedom than it would have with a double jointed bit. The mouthpiece is 14 mm thick and the bit rings have a diameter of 65 mm.
The main purpose of a Warmblut cheek bit is to exert lateral pressure, this emphasis on the turning aids is especially useful for young horses. The arms prevent the bit from being pulled through the mouth and ensure stability of the bit.
