Bandages for horses and ponies

Bandages are wrapped around your horse's legs and protect them from dirt, knocks and cold during training and in the stable. At Lepona you will find fleece bandages, elastic bandages, wool and knitted bandages, stable bandages and cohesive bandages in Shetland, pony and full sizes. Matching bandage pads are available right alongside.

Which types of bandages are there?

  • Fleece bandages: soft, warm and easy to put on. The classic for work in the arena, often matching the saddle pad, for example the Velvet and Pearls models by Kentucky or the Loire polo bandages by LeMieux.
  • Elastic bandages: stretchy and close-fitting. Many models combine elastic with fleece or terry cloth.
  • Wool and knitted bandages: classic and breathable, such as the virgin wool bandages by Acavallo or the Show Vegan Wool by Kentucky.
  • Stable bandages: longer and usually wrapped over a pad, for the stable or for transport. Dirt-repellent models are available from Kentucky.
  • Cohesive bandages: self-adhesive, without Velcro, for example by Premiere or Imperial Riding.

Which size do I need?

Most bandages come in pony and full length, some also for Shetlands. Pony bandages are shorter and narrower. If you are unsure, check the size information in the product description.

How to wrap bandages correctly

Wrap from top to bottom and back up again, evenly and without creases. The bandage should sit firmly but not constrict. The fastening sits on the outside of the leg, not on the tendon. With bandage pads the pressure is spread more evenly, especially with stable bandages. Check the fit after riding and remove stable bandages regularly.

Bandages or horse boots?

When wrapping, you adjust bandages individually to the leg. Horse boots are quicker to put on and have a firm shell. For the trailer, travel boots are a good choice. Our horse boots guide explains what the different types of boots do.
