Horse toys

Especially in autumn and winter, many horses spend more time in the box. Horse toys bring variety to the stable: for nibbling, pulling, pushing or picking at hay. Here you will find toys to hang up, balls for the box and paddock, and feed toys that make your horse eat its hay more slowly. Brands include QHP, LeMieux, Eskadron, Waldhausen, Equestro and Kentucky Horsewear.

Toys to hang up

You hang most box toys on a cord in the box. The QHP models, such as the box hanger, Gwenn or Isalyn, have a velour or suede outer and are filled with coconut or jute fibre. LeMieux has figures such as a hedgehog, bee, banana or piglet with hessian lining and natural filling; on the hedgehog, elastic loops hold carrots or treats. The Eskadron animals such as the dolphin, hamster and bear have an upper made of faux leather and a filling of untreated wood wool. With Waldhausen, a plastic bottle in the tummy crackles when the horse bites, for example on Emily the unicorn or Lotte the llama. The bottle can be removed and replaced via a hook-and-loop fastener. Equestro offers toys in the shape of a carrot and an apple.

Balls for the box and paddock

The horse pushes balls around with its nose and chest. For the paddock and arena there is the QHP horse football made of PVC with a diameter of 80 to 100 cm; the two-tone version is smaller at 75 cm and better suited to ponies and smaller horses. Smaller balls are suitable for the box, such as the Waldhausen Fun Ball with 25 cm and strawberry scent or the Premiere horse play ball made of vinyl with 17.5 cm. It comes uninflated; a pump is not included.

Feed toys and slow feeders

Feed toys combine enrichment with eating. You fill the Waldhausen hay ball made of thermoplastic rubber with hay, carrots or apple pieces and hang it up on the 2 m strap supplied. The Relax horse play and hay ball from Kentucky Horsewear, the "Take it easy" hay ball (42 × 42 cm, with hanger) and the "Slow down" feed and play ball work in a similar way. On the Waldhausen carrot ball, you put carrots or treats into rubber loops. With the QHP snuffle mat, you hide treats between the layers of fabric and the horse searches for them with its nose. The Bizzy Ball from Bizzy Horse has a wing design and aroma sponges with peppermint oil. It is supplied without a lick and without a rope. You will find more hay nets and hay bags under hay nets and slow feeders, and treats for filling under treats and licks.

Horse toys as a gift

For Advent there are toys with Christmas motifs, such as the LeMieux penguin with a Santa hat, Rudi the reindeer from Waldhausen or the QHP "gift box" box hanger, which comes in gift packaging. You will find more ideas among the gifts for riders and in our guide Advent calendars for riders.

Playing safely

Hang toys so that your horse cannot get caught in the cord or rope, and watch it the first time. Check seams, ropes and filling regularly and replace the toy as soon as it shows signs of wear. Fill feed toys sparingly, as treats count towards the daily ration. You will find more for everyday stable life under stable supplies and in the overview feed and stable supplies.
