Reins on the horse

Leather, rubber or webbing

Reins

Reins are the direct connection between hand and bit. At Lepona you will find leather reins, rubber reins and webbing reins in various colours and sizes, plus curb reins and long reins. Depending on your riding style, the weather and the grip you prefer, choose between models with or without stops, round-stitched or with an anti-slip coating. Filter by size, colour and manufacturer to find your perfect rein.

Which reins suit you and your horse?

Reins differ in material, width, length, grip and fastening. What fits best depends on your hand, your style of riding and your horse. Here you will find an overview of the reins in the shop.

Rein materials at a glance

  • Leather reins: Depending on the finish, leather feels soft or grippy. In the shop there are models in soft leather, round-stitched or without stops. Leather needs care; you will find suitable products under Leather care.
  • Rubber reins: reins with a rubber layer or rubberised surface. They usually feel grippy in the hand even when wet. Many models have stops.
  • Webbing reins: reins made of webbing, which are often light and robust. They are available with and without stops.
  • Biothane reins: reins made of Biothane, a plastic-coated material. There are a few models in the shop.
  • Curb reins: reins for the curb bit, usually narrow. They are needed for riding in a double bridle, which you will find under double bridles and curb bits.
  • Long reins: longer reins for work from the ground. There are a few models in the shop; you will find further accessories under lunging accessories.

Stops, anti-slip and fastenings

Stops in the rein give the hand a hold. Anti-slip coatings are meant to make the rein grippier. If you prefer a smoother feel, choose reins without stops. Fastenings include buckles, bridle hooks, snap hooks and clips. A snap hook or clip is practical when changing reins, while a buckle can usually be adjusted in length. Which fastening suits the bridle is stated with the item.

Width and length

In the shop you will find reins in different widths, for example 13, 16, 19 and 20 mm. Narrower reins feel different in the hand from wide ones. The right width is a question of hand size and your preference. The length has to suit horse and rider; the measurements are given with the item.

Size: Warmblut, Cob, Pony and Shetty

Reins come in the sizes Warmblut, Cob, Pony, Shetty and others. Choose the matching size in the filter. For ponies and Shetland ponies, the selection and number of models in the shop is smaller than for warmbloods. The size designation is a guide; compare the measurements in the item with your bridle.

Colours and brands

Reins are mainly available in black and brown, as well as in other colours. Manufacturers in the shop include Dyon, BR, Kavalkade, QHP, Waldhausen, Trust, Premiere, Passier and Schockemöhle Sports. Use the manufacturer filter to get to your preferred model more quickly.

Reins to match the bridle

Reins are part of the complete bridle. You will also find matching snaffle bridles, bits, browbands and further snaffle accessories with us. If you ride without a bit, take a look at the bitless bridles. You will also find additional auxiliary reins with us; please discuss with your riding instructor or trainer whether to use them.
