Stable shoes and outdoor footwear

In the stable, in the paddock and when walking with your horse, you need different shoes than in the saddle. Here you will find stable shoes and stable boots, warmly lined winter boots, wellies and work boots, as well as waterproof trainers for everyday life around the horse. For riding itself, take a look at our riding boots and jodhpur boots.

Stable shoes: waterproof and non-slip

A good stable shoe keeps wet and mud out, has a grippy sole and is quick to put on and take off. The Cavan and Cavan Zip stable shoes from BR are made of waxed crazy horse leather, have a waterproof foot section and a self-cleaning sole to which hardly any sand sticks. The Audace made of robust leather is also waterproof. The stable shoes from Imperial Riding have a waterproof sole, a neoprene shaft and a zip on the outside.

If you would also like to get on your horse briefly, the riding and stable shoes from Busse are worth a look. The Dallas is a leather lace-up shoe, waterproof up to the lacing, with a treaded sole, a firm heel and a slip-through stop. The Dallas Winter comes warmly lined, and the ZIP IT WP made of nubuck leather has a waterproof membrane and a firm heel.

Warm through the winter

In frosty weather, the lining is what counts. The Oakland stable boots from ELT are made of nubuck cowhide with a teddy lining and a zip at the back; the Oklahoma has a soft textile lining. The Bootie Rainless models from ELT are waterproof and lined; on the Rainless Pro, a cuff with a drawcord stops hay and straw from falling into the shoe. The Chicago thermal shoe has a waterproof galosh, fleece lining and reflective laces.

Imperial Riding offers the Frosty, Fur and Freezy stable shoes with faux fur lining, the Frosty with a dirt guard and drawcord. From HV Polo come the Glaslynn winter boots with faux fur or fleece inside; the long Glaslynn has reflective prints. The Lyn has a faux sherpa lining. The Daan outdoor boot from QHP combines a waterproof membrane with a warm lining and a side zip.

Muck Boots: wellies and work boots

The largest selection comes from Muck Boots. The Arctic models are made for cold days: Arctic Sport II with 5 mm neoprene and fleece lining as Ankle, Mid and Tall, Arctic ICE Tall with a Vibram Arctic Grip sole which, according to the manufacturer, also grips on wet ice, and Arctic Adventure and Arctic Weekend for long walks. For heavy work in the yard there is the Chore High with reinforced toe and heel and the Muckmaster with MS-1 sole. The Woody Max is designed for very cold days. Derwent II and Edgewater II are light all-rounders, and the Mudder Tall S5 is a safety boot to EN ISO 20345.

You can slip quickly into the Muckster II, Muckster Lite Clog, Forager Low and Originals Ankle. For children there is the Mini Mucks.

Waterproof trainers

If you do not want to change between the stable and everyday life, choose trainers with a membrane. The Kanta trainers from LeMieux are available for men, juniors and as a Slip On, with a waterproof membrane and all-round splash guard. According to the manufacturer, the Outscape from Muck Boots is 100 % waterproof; the Oro Blanco trainer from ANKY is water-repellent and has a reinforced toe cap.

How to find the right shoe

  • Height: low shoes and clogs are quick to put on; tall boots protect in muddy paddocks and in snow.
  • Lining: neoprene, fleece or faux fur keep you warm. A light lining is enough for summer and the transitional seasons.
  • Sole: a coarse tread gives grip on wet ground. For riding you need a heel so that your foot does not slip through the stirrup.
  • Size: with winter boots, allow room for thick socks. Warm riding socks are available to match.

Care and accessories

Let wet shoes dry in the air, not directly on the radiator, and regularly clear the sole of muck and stones. You will find shoe brushes, shoe polish, insoles and boot jacks under Boot accessories. For the cold season, winter jackets go well with them, and our guide Riding in winter has more tips.

A stable shoe is made for work around the horse: waterproof, robust and with a grippy sole. For riding you need a firm heel and a sole that does not get caught in the stirrup. The riding and stable shoes from Busse combine both.

For example BR Cavan, Cavan Zip and Audace, Busse Dallas and ZIP IT WP, the ELT Bootie Rainless models and the Imperial Riding stable shoes. According to the manufacturer, many Muck Boots are 100 % waterproof.

Models with a neoprene, fleece or faux fur lining, for example Muck Boots Arctic Sport II and Woody Max, ELT Oakland stable boots, Imperial Riding Frosty, Fur and Freezy, HV Polo Glaslynn or the Busse Dallas Winter.

Not in every pair. For riding you need a heel so that your foot does not slip through the stirrup. According to the manufacturer, the Busse Dallas has a firm heel with a slip-through stop. For the saddle, riding boots or jodhpur boots are the better choice.

Allow room for thick socks and ideally try the boots on in the afternoon, when your feet are slightly larger. You can see the available sizes on the item.

Yes, for example the Muck Boots Mini Mucks and the LeMieux Kanta Junior trainer. Children’s feet grow quickly, so check the size before every season.
