Chaps on the leg

For women, men & children

Riding chaps

Riding chaps – also called half chaps or mini chaps – are leg pieces that you wear over paddock boots or ankle boots. You can take them off after riding. At Lepona you will find models in leather, soft leather, faux leather and mixed materials, including junior sizes. Filter by size, colour and brand. How chaps compare with riding boots and what to look for in the fit is explained in the text and FAQ below.

What are riding chaps?

Chaps are separate boot shafts for riding. Together with paddock boots or ankle boots they create a long leg line, similar to a tall riding boot – with the difference that you can take the chaps off after training. Whether a model is cut more as dressage chaps/boot shafts or as a mini chap is stated in the item name and description.

Chaps or riding boots?

A riding boot is a closed tall boot. Chaps are leg pieces and require suitable paddock boots or jodhpur boots. Many riders choose chaps if they already have paddock boots or want to switch shafts flexibly. What suits you depends on discipline, fit and preference – if in doubt, we will advise you.

Fit and calf circumference

Besides the shaft length, the calf circumference is decisive: the chap should fit snugly enough not to slip, but must not constrict the calf. Many models have a zip and an elastic insert; the direction of the zip (upwards or downwards) and whether there is a dressage arch are stated with the item. Sizes in the filter include XS to XL (some XXL). Use the manufacturer's measurements and size chart – and measure your calf at the widest point, if the manufacturer specifies this.

Materials

  • Leather / soft leather / oiled leather: classic look; care according to the manufacturer (clean, condition, do not dry on a radiator).
  • Synthetic leather and mixed materials: e.g. combinations of synthetic leather and soft leather; care instructions are given with the item.
  • Other materials: the range includes models with neoprene content or cork, among others – details are given with each product.

Whether the surface is smooth, soft or has glitter/crystal details doesn't change the fit, but can affect care and look.

Colours and brands

Most chaps in the shop are black; brown and blue are also represented in the colour filter. Brands with items in the filter include Kavalkade, ELT, QHP, Premiere, Waldhausen and BR. You will find Q-essentials models via the brand filter or under Q-essentials. Use size and brand to filter faster.

Care

Cleaning and care depend on the material and the label. Treat leather differently from synthetic leather or textile elements; always follow the manufacturer's information.

Advice

Riding boots are tall, closed boots. Chaps are leg pieces that you wear over paddock boots or jodhpur boots and can take off after riding. Both options can create a long leg line; the choice depends on fit, discipline and preference.

As a rule, yes: chaps are worn over paddock boots or jodhpur boots. Whether a particular shoe model fits depends on the heel, the shaft height and the manufacturer's information. You will find suitable boots in the category Paddock boots.

Compare the shaft length and calf circumference with the manufacturer's size chart. Measure your calf at the point specified by the manufacturer (often the widest point). The chap should fit firmly without pinching. If you're unsure, we are happy to advise you.

Half chaps are shorter or straight-cut leg pieces, often with an elastic insert. Dressage chaps or gaiters look more like a tall riding boot and may have a dressage arch. The exact name is given with the item.

The shop offers, among others, leather, soft leather, oiled leather, synthetic leather and mixed materials (e.g. with neoprene or cork content). Care and look differ – details and care instructions are given with the item.

Yes, the range includes junior and children's models. Filter by size and check the manufacturer's measurements, because children quickly grow out of a size. We are happy to help you choose.
