Which riding jacket suits the weather and use?
A riding jacket should keep you warm, allow movement in the saddle and suit the weather. Whether stable work, arena or hack: cut, material and lining are what matter. The exact properties (water-repellent, windproof, breathable) are stated on the item and in the manufacturer's information.
Types of jacket at a glance
- Winter jackets and thermal models: lined jackets and coats for cold days. Whether there is a hood, detachable sleeves or a long parka cut is stated with the item.
- Hybrid jackets: jackets with a mix of materials – often warmer sections on the body and more flexible or more breathable zones at the sides or sleeves. They are often suitable for training and the transitional season, when a heavy winter jacket would be too warm. Whether a model is wind- or water-repellent is stated with the item.
- Fleece jackets: jackets made of fleece or with fleece content; often as a mid layer under a rain or softshell jacket or on their own on dry, cool days. Care instructions are on the label.
- Rain jackets and coats: models designed to protect against wet weather. Whether a model is water-repellent or waterproof and what breathability is stated is given with the item.
- Softshell, technical and transitional jackets: lighter jackets for wind, light rain and mild temperatures. Two-way zips and longer backs are common on many riding jackets; whether a specific model has them is stated in the product details.
- Sweat jackets and light jackets: sweatshirt jackets and thinner models for mild days or as a layer in the layering system.
Size and fit
In the size filter you will find, among others, clothing sizes 30 to 52 as well as XS to XXL and occasionally children's sizes. A riding jacket should give you enough freedom of movement when sitting and mounting and still fit over your breeches and body protector (if you wear one). Use the manufacturer's size chart – cuts vary.
Wearing and combining
Using the layering system, you can wear a fleece or hybrid jacket under a rain jacket; on dry days one layer is often enough. Matching the jackets: riding gilets, technical shirts, jumpers & sweatshirts and breeches.
Colours and brands
Riding jackets come mainly in blue and black, as well as green, brown, grey, beige, pink and other colours. Brands in the shop include Pikeur, ELT, Ego7, eaSt, Kingsland, BR, QHP, WHIS, Eskadron, Samshield, ANKY and LeMieux. Use the brand filter. You will also find more Pikeur jackets under Pikeur riding jackets.
Winter, transitional or rain – a quick decision
For frosty yard work and hacks, lined winter jackets or insulating hybrid models are the first choice. In the transitional season, hybrid, fleece or light softshell jackets are often enough. In wet weather, what counts is the information given with the item: water-repellent protects against showers, waterproof is a manufacturer's claim with clear limits. Reflective details, a hood and adjustable cuffs are practical extras, if the model has them.
Sweat jackets and the layering system
Sweat jackets and thin technical jackets are suitable as an outer layer on mild days or as a mid layer under a rain jacket. Fleece underneath, wind or rain protection on top: that way you stay flexible without having to reach straight for the heaviest winter jacket. Which combination suits you depends on the temperature, the wind and how intensively you move.
Care
How you may wash and dry a jacket is stated on the care label and in the manufacturer's instructions. Technical and membrane materials are often treated differently from fleece or down; fabric softener can be undesirable with some water-repellent finishes – follow the information given with the item.
Advice
Not sure about the size or model? We are happy to advise you by phone, WhatsApp or video.
Riding jackets are often designed for use in the saddle: for example with a longer back, a two-way zip or elastic inserts. Whether a model is dirt- or water-repellent is stated with the item. For the yard and riding, it's best to choose by cut and the manufacturer's weather information.
A two-way zip can be opened from the top and from the bottom. In the saddle you can open the lower part without exposing your upper body. Whether the jacket has such a zip is stated in the product details.
For cold days, lined winter jackets, thermal models, parkas or well-insulated hybrid jackets are common. The type of lining and weather protection is stated with the item. You can filter by the season "Winter" and by size. You will also find tips in our guide "Riding in winter".
Hybrid jackets often combine warmer sections with more flexible or more breathable zones. They are often worn for training and in the transitional season. Whether wind- or water-repellent is stated with each model.
For mild temperatures, light technical, softshell, rain or sweat jackets are common; they should protect against wind and light rain without being too warm. Breathability and weather protection are stated with the item.
Follow the care label and the manufacturer's instructions. Fleece, softshell, membranes and down are treated differently. Whether washing, reproofing or only air drying is intended is stated with the item.
