Ladies' breeches: grip, cut and material
Good ladies' breeches fit closely without constricting. They don't wrinkle below the knee and give you enough freedom of movement when rising to the trot and in the sitting position. Which breeches suit you depends on your discipline, your figure and the weather.
Full grip, knee grip or no grip
- Full grip or full seat: The grip runs from the knee up to the seat and gives plenty of hold in the saddle. Most of the ladies' models in our range come with full grip.
- Knee grip or knee patch: The grip only sits on the inside of the knee. This leaves more freedom of the leg and is popular for jumping and cross-country.
- Silicone, faux leather or leather: Most models have a silicone grip. Some Pikeur models have a full seat made of faux leather. The type of grip is stated with each item.
Breeches, riding leggings or jodhpurs
Classic ladies' breeches have belt loops, pockets and a zip. Riding leggings have a wide, elastic waistband and usually no zip. Many riders wear them in the stable and for training. Jodhpurs are cut wider from the knee down and go with paddock boots. Under tall riding boots you wear breeches or leggings with a close-fitting leg end.
Fit: high-waist, long sizes and curvy cuts
- Rise: Many ladies' models come high-waisted, others with a regular rise. Which you find more comfortable is a matter of taste. A high waistband often slips less in the sitting position.
- Long sizes: Some models from Pikeur, Busse and Euro-Star are also available in long sizes such as 72, 76 or 80. These are doubled German dress sizes with a longer leg, so for example 72 for size 36 in long.
- Curvy figures: There are special cuts for curvier figures. Examples are the Elly breeches (developed for plus-size figures according to the manufacturer) and the Maja Glam Curved from ELT as well as the Candela Curvy from Pikeur.
- Long legs: LeMieux offers tall versions with a longer leg.
Always compare your measurements with the size chart for the item, because every brand cuts differently.
For training, competition and cold days
Dark and coloured models are practical for training and in the stable. For the show ground you will find white and light-coloured breeches together under Competition breeches. Which colours are allowed is set out in the schedule or rules. When it gets cold, winter and thermal breeches with a warming inside help, matched with winter riding jackets.
Brands for ladies' breeches
Ladies' breeches are available from brands including Pikeur, Samshield, LeMieux, ELT, Busse, eaSt, QHP and Kentucky Horsewear. To go with them you will find belts. Reduced models are available under Breeches sale.
That depends on your figure and your taste. A high waistband sits at the waist, often slips less in the sitting position and combines well with short tops. A regular rise puts less pressure on the stomach when sitting. It's best to try both.
These are long sizes. The normal German dress size is doubled and the leg is cut longer: 72 corresponds roughly to size 36 in long, 80 roughly to size 40 in long. Long sizes are only available for some models, for example from Pikeur, Busse and Euro-Star. The brand's size chart is what counts.
A higher stretch content and a high waistband are comfortable for many riders. There are special cuts for curvier figures, such as the Elly breeches and the Maja Glam Curved from ELT or the Candela Curvy from Pikeur. With strong calves, jodhpurs can be more comfortable because they are cut wider from the knee down.
Silicone grip is applied to the fabric as a pattern, and the fabric underneath stays elastic. A patch made of faux leather or leather is a sewn-on piece of material and looks more classic. How much grip you feel with each is individual. Care instructions are on the label.
White or light-coloured breeches are usually worn at shows. Which colours are allowed is set out in the schedule or rules. You will find a selection under Competition breeches. Many riders have a light pair just for shows and a darker one for training.
Yes, some models are made for this, for example the maternity leggings from QHP, made of elastic fabric with an extra-wide elastic waistband according to the product description. Whether and how long you ride during pregnancy is something to discuss with your doctor or midwife.
