Comfort and style in the saddle

Which breeches suit you?

The right breeches fit closely without constricting, don't wrinkle below the knee and give you enough freedom of movement in the saddle. Three questions are decisive: how much grip do you want, what will you wear the breeches for and in what weather do you ride?

Full seat, knee patch or no grip

  • Full seat (full grip): The grip runs from the knee along the inside of the thighs up to the seat. This gives plenty of hold in the saddle and is often chosen for dressage and by beginners.
  • Knee patch (knee grip): The grip only sits on the inside of the knee. This leaves more freedom of the leg and is popular for jumping and cross-country.
  • Silicone or leather: Modern models usually have a silicone grip, classic ones a patch made of leather or faux leather. The type of grip is stated with each item.

Breeches, riding leggings or jodhpurs?

Classic breeches have belt loops, pockets and usually a zip. Riding leggings are made of elastic stretch material, have a wide waistband and are often made without a zip. Jodhpurs are cut wider from the knee down and are worn with paddock boots, often combined with chaps. Under tall riding boots you wear breeches or leggings with a close-fitting leg end.

Breeches for women, men and children

The choice is biggest for ladies' breeches, with high-waist cuts, long sizes and models for curvier figures. Men's breeches are usually cut straighter and have classic pockets. Children's breeches and children's riding leggings come in children's sizes and often with a full seat. Use the "Gender" filter to narrow down the selection.

Competition, training and winter

  • Competition: You will find white or light-coloured breeches together under Competition breeches. Which colours are allowed at your show is set out in the respective schedule or rules.
  • Training and stable: Dark and coloured models in easy-care functional material; in summer, light fabrics and mesh inserts are pleasant.
  • Winter: For cold days there are winter and thermal breeches with a warming inside, also as winter riding leggings. Tips in our guide Riding in winter.

Breeches FAQ

With a full seat, the grip runs from the knee up to the seat and gives plenty of hold in the saddle. Many dressage riders and beginners like this. The knee patch only sits on the inside of the knee and leaves more freedom of the leg, which is popular for jumping and cross-country. There is no "best" grip: what counts is what feels safe and comfortable for you.

Riding leggings are made of elastic stretch material, have a wide waistband and usually no zip. They are comfortable in the stable and for training. Classic breeches have belt loops, pockets and a zip and are usual at shows. Both are available with a full seat or knee patches.

The materials are similar, the cuts are not. Ladies' breeches come high-waisted or with a regular rise and with the largest choice of models, some also in long sizes. Men's breeches are usually cut straighter. Children's breeches come in children's sizes, often with a full seat.

Measure your waist, hips and inside leg and compare the measurements with the size chart of the respective brand – the cuts vary. Some ladies' models are also available in long sizes (e.g. 72 or 80) with a longer leg. The breeches should fit closely without constricting.

Many beginners feel more secure with a full seat because it gives more grip in the saddle. More important than the grip, however, is that the breeches fit well, don't constrict and don't wrinkle below the knee.

In winter, breeches with a warming, lined or brushed inside or made of softshell are pleasant. Make sure they stay breathable and fit under your boots. You will find a selection under Winter and thermal breeches.

Light, breathable fabrics and mesh inserts are more comfortable to wear in warm weather, as are thin riding leggings. Modern breeches are usually made of blended fabrics such as polyamide, polyester or cotton with elastane. The exact composition is stated with the item.

Follow the care label. Washing at 30 °C inside out is often recommended to protect the grip, without fabric softener and without a tumble dryer.
