In addition to one riding helmet there is other protective equipment for riders that can protect you from serious injuries in an emergency. Back protectors or protective vests are being used more and more in cross country and show jumping. If you fall, your internal organs, back, neck and spine are well padded with a protective vest. As the name suggests, a back protector primarily protects the back. There are also airbag vests, which in their normal state do not hinder the movement of the rider, but are inflated at lightning speed in the event of a fall. In addition to this obvious protective clothing, there are also numerous equestrian items with reflectors that make you more visible when riding. These are available for both the rider and your horse. Incidentally, when riding off-road you can also rely on technical support and, for example, attach the Tocsen fall sensor to your riding helmet. This informs your emergency contacts if you lose consciousness in a fall.
In addition to this protective clothing, you should of course also adhere to general safety when handling the horse. That means sturdy footwear (no sneakers or 'safety flip-flops') such as riding ankle boots or riding boots that reach above the ankle. They should also not be too bulky and have a heel. Make sure stable shoes and rubber boots have enough profile so that you cannot slip. Riding gloves are a must when leading young horses and lunging your horse. Jackets should be closed and with outer clothing you have to make sure that you can't get caught anywhere. You should avoid jewelry as much as possible.
Equestrian sport is of course more dangerous than tennis or football, for example. But that brings with it the handling of a large, heavy animal. The horse is a flight animal and will try to run away headless if there is danger. A horse's senses are far better developed than those of the rider and so it senses danger before you even notice it. Therefore, the correct handling of the horse and also the right riding and protective clothing is so important. If you observe the safety instructions and conscientiously implement the rules you have learned when handling the horse, horseback riding is a great hobby. It teaches you the conscientious handling of an animal and trains responsibility. Riding itself requires your whole body and your attention. Are you also wearing a protective vest and very important! equipped with a riding helmet, then many riding accidents can be significantly alleviated.
YES! Any protective clothing that you put on will help you reduce serious injuries in an emergency. But there are a few things to consider: The protective vest must fit. That means it must be neither too big nor too small. Read our note on protective vests. Do you feel unsafe when riding, do you go off-road or do you jump with your horse? Then you should urgently think about buying a safety vest, a back protector or an airbag vest.
Riding in traffic is significantly more dangerous than on the local riding arena or in the riding hall. There are not only other road users such as pedestrians, dogs, cyclists and of course cars and other vehicles. Since riding is not allowed on the pedestrian walkway, you will inevitably have to ride or dismount on the street. If you regularly ride in traffic or have to cross a road on your way to your favorite cross-country trail, you should make yourself and your horse visible as much as possible. You can do this with equestrian equipment that has reflectors. These are available as vests, blankets, gaiters and other products for your horse. Never ride without a helmet and use a body armor when riding in traffic. Because even if your horse is actually super good, road traffic is a special challenge. Vehicles driving by quickly, and even honking their horns on purpose, can startle your horse and put you in serious danger. So before you ride off, take care of the best possible protection for both of you.
