The original curry comb was made of iron with a smooth underside. With this you can practically scrape the dried dirt off the horse. When using an iron curry comb, care must be taken to always brush in the direction of hair growth, otherwise the coat will become dull and may break off. There are also iron combs with a handle and a jagged underside, as well as spring combs made of iron. Both are particularly suitable for removing really stubborn incrustations. But you should be very careful with it because the horse's skin is sensitive. Many horses therefore do not like the iron curry comb. In addition, you should not use it on bony areas, but only on the muscles.
The plastic harrow has the advantage that it is significantly lighter and the material is "softer" than the metal harrow. The plastic harrow is the most common model and is available in many colors and sizes.
In many cleaning boxes there is a rubber curry comb in addition to the plastic curry comb. This is also jagged on the underside. Because the rubber "sticks" to the coat, some horses may find it uncomfortable. However, this effect is good when changing fur, because loose hair is gently pulled out. You should not use the rubber harrow with too much pressure. Due to its flexibility, a rubber curry comb is also suitable for cleaning encrusted, bony areas such as the joints. Here, too, you should clean with little pressure and plan a little more time.
The hedgehog or needle curry comb is particularly suitable for longer fur. Because this curry comb has longer, thin nubs that look like spikes. Hence the harrow has its name. The nubs penetrate through the dense fur onto the horse's skin and thus cause a strong massage. Therefore use the needle curry comb with little pressure and pay attention to the reaction of your horse. Incidentally, the needle groomer is not suitable for brushing the mane or tail. The individual knobs are too narrow for that. You would pull out too much hair.
