The company Nebu-Tec was founded in 1996 by Eike and Stefan Kern. Initially, inhalers were developed and manufactured for the precise dose inhalation of drugs in human medicine. In 2004, in consultation with veterinarians, the decision was made to make the inhalation devices accessible to animals as well. In the following year, Nebu-Tec was the first company to bring an inhalation device for horses onto the market. The veterinary area was expanded to include devices for cats and dogs in the following years.
It should be emphasized that the production is 100% in Germany. The assembly, adjustment and final inspection are carried out exclusively at the Elsenfeld location. The company has laboratories and air-conditioned rooms there that meet the high medical requirements in human and veterinary medicine. This guarantees consistent quality.
The advantage of inhalation therapy is that the active ingredients reach their destination directly and quickly, namely the respiratory tract. This also means that the drug can be dosed significantly lower, which greatly reduces undesirable side effects. Thanks to the mobile set, the horse owner can use it himself easily and at home. You can support your horse with chronic respiratory diseases by letting him inhale saline solutions on a regular basis. Because this keeps the mucous membranes moist, which makes it more difficult for viruses and bacteria to establish themselves. However, if the airways are very congested, systemic treatment is often necessary. Heavy mucus with a yellow or greenish discharge indicates an infection. In any case, please clarify a treatment with your veterinarian.
Please note that the information on our site is not sufficient for a self-diagnosis. The veterinarian should always be consulted for the diagnosis of respiratory diseases and prior to treatment.
No! The inhalation of saline solution supports the mucous membranes preventively in defense against infection. Well-humidified airways make it difficult for viruses and bacteria to establish themselves. If your horse is sick, low-dose medication can also be nebulized after consultation with the veterinarian. Because only a low dose is required for nebulization, side effects are significantly reduced. By inhalation, the active ingredient reaches the desired location directly and can develop its effect there in a targeted manner.
The inhalation device can be used preventively, but also in case of acute illness. Especially in winter and in the transitional periods there are coughs, mucous airways and runny noses. In these cases, a consultation with the veterinarian is necessary to clarify whether the horse needs medication. Various drugs can be nebulized using the SaHoMa®-II inhalation device. However, inhaling saline solution can also help your horse in such cases.
It is advisable to move the horse after the inhalation, as the metabolism of your horse is stimulated by the movement and the mucus and secretion can be loosened by the deep breaths during the movement. Subsequent feeding from the ground can also be beneficial and have a positive effect on the therapy, as the horse pulls its head down and the mucus can drain off better. Of course, you can also let your horse inhale again after the exercise.
During the acclimatization phase, and therefore especially the first time, you should stay with your horse to see whether it is relaxed when it comes to putting on the mask and the inhalation process. If your horse stays calm, you can also do other activities thanks to the automatic switch-off or clean your horse during the inhalation process. The SaHoMa®-II MeshThe nebuliser switches off automatically as soon as the medication or saline solution has completely evaporated.
Since the inhalation device is wireless, the horse does not necessarily have to be tied up. For example, it can also be used to warm the crotch or lunge it, since deeper and more frequent breathing when moving has a positive effect on the effect of the therapy. However, it should be noted that you do not overexert your horse with respiratory problems by inhaling while moving. If you exert yourself too much, your horse will breathe less deeply and the saline solution or medication will no longer reach the lower airways. In addition, the device is very light and almost noiseless, which means that it can also be used on fearful and sensitive horses.
What products do you need so that a horse can be inhaled?
The SaHoMa®-II inhalation set (abbreviation for Safety Horse Mask) was launched on the market in 2005 and at that time was the first cordless and hose-free inhalation device for horses. The device consists of sturdy, transparent plastic, a sealing ring, a filter with a matching filter basket and the fastening strap. The sealing ring and the inhalation basket ensure that the nebulized aerosols cannot escape and that no saline solution or medication are lost.
The control unit is included in the delivery. With the latest model, it is possible to select a time for how long the nebulization should last. The aerosol generator is also manufactured by Nebu-Tec itself. So everything comes from one company and can be continuously improved and coordinated.
The SaHoMa®-II inhalation set contains all products except the inhalation solution that your horse needs for an inhalation. You can get the inhalation solution either from your veterinarian, if additional medication has to be nebulized, or as an NaCl or brine solution.
Almost noiseless fogging is important. If the inhalation device works quietly, it is more comfortable for your horse and causes less stress than noisy devices. You should also pay attention to the particle size when nebulising. The smallest possible particles should be produced. The combination of particle size and time is also in the foreground, because the smaller the particles, the longer the nebulization process takes. A good combination of both makes sense here.
Also make sure that the product is of good quality. All parts should be stable enough to withstand handling horses. Individual adaptation to the head and nostrils is also important so that the aerosols do not escape undesirably.
With the inhalation device from Nebu-Tec, the resistance during inhalation is also low. If the resistance is too high, it is harder to breathe in. This is not the case with the SaHoMa®-II inhaler for horses through the membrane. This also prevents the horse from inhaling dusty outside air or aerosols from escaping.
