What distinguishes the company Nebu-Tec?

The Nebu-Tec company was founded in 1996 by Eike and Stefan Kern. Initially, inhalers were developed and manufactured for the precise dose inhalation of medicines in human medicine. In 2004, in consultation with veterinarians, the decision was made to make the inhalation devices accessible to animals as well. The following year, Nebu-Tec was the first company to market an inhaler for horses. In the years that followed, the veterinary sector was expanded to include devices for cats and dogs.

It should be particularly emphasized that the production is 100% in Germany. Assembly, adjustment and final inspection are carried out exclusively at the Elsenfeld site. The company has laboratories and air-conditioned rooms there that meet the high medical requirements in human and veterinary medicine. This ensures consistent quality.

How can inhalation help my horse with respiratory problems?

The advantage of inhalation therapy is that the active ingredients reach their destination quickly and directly, namely the respiratory tract. This also means that the drug can be dosed much lower, which greatly reduces unwanted side effects. Thanks to the mobile set, the application is easy to carry out by the horse owner himself and at home. You can support your horse, especially with chronic respiratory diseases, by letting it inhale saline solutions regularly. Because this keeps the mucous membranes moist, making it harder for viruses and bacteria to establish themselves. However, if the airways are very congested, systemic treatment is often necessary. Heavy mucus with yellow or greenish discharge indicate an infection. Please clarify any treatment with your veterinarian.

In this context, please note that the information on our site is not sufficient for a self-diagnosis. The veterinarian should always be consulted to diagnose respiratory diseases and before treatment.

Does my horse have to be sick to inhale NaCl?

No! The inhalation of saline solution supports the mucous membranes in the defense against infections. Well-moisturized airways make it difficult for viruses and bacteria to establish themselves. If your horse is ill, medication can also be nebulized in low doses after consultation with the veterinarian. Because only a low dose is required for nebulization, side effects are significantly reduced. Through inhalation, the active substance reaches the desired area directly and can develop its effect there.

For what problems are inhalers used in horses? When does inhalation therapy help in horses?

The inhalation device can be used preventively, but also in the event of an acute illness. Coughing, congested airways and runny noses occur especially in winter and in the transitional periods. In these cases, a consultation with the veterinarian is necessary to clarify whether the horse needs medication. Various medications can be nebulized using the SaHoMa®-II inhalation device. But inhaling saline solution can also help your horse in such cases.

Should I exercise my horse before or after the inhalation?

It is advisable to move the horse after inhalation, as your horse's metabolism is stimulated by the movement and the mucus and secretion can be loosened by the deep breaths during the movement. Subsequent feeding from the ground can also be advantageous and have a positive effect on the therapy, since the horse puts its head down and the mucus can drain off better. Of course you can also let your horse inhale again after the movement.

Can my horse inhale alone?

During the familiarization phase, and therefore especially the first time, you should stand by your horse to see whether it is relaxed about putting on the mask and the inhalation process. If your horse stays calm, you can also pursue other activities or clean your horse during the inhalation process thanks to the automatic switch-off. The SaHoMa®-II MeshNebulizer will turn off automatically once the medication or saline has completely evaporated.

Since the inhalation device is wireless, the horse does not necessarily have to be tied up. For example, it can also be used to warm up a step or lunge, since the deep and more frequent breathing during movement has a positive effect on the effect of the therapy. However, it should be noted that you do not overexert your horse with respiratory problems by inhaling while moving. If you exert too much effort, your horse will breathe less deeply and the saline solution or medication will no longer reach the lower airways. In addition, the device is very light and almost silent, which means that it can also be used with anxious and sensitive horses.

What products are required for a horse to be inhaled?

The inhalation set SaHoMa®-II (abbreviation for Safety Horse Mask) was launched on the market in 2005 and was the first cordless and hose-free inhalation device for horses at the time. The device consists of stable, transparent plastic, a sealing ring, a filter with a matching filter basket and the fastening strap. The sealing ring and the inhalation basket ensure that the nebulized aerosols cannot escape and that no saline solution or medication is lost.

The control unit is supplied directly. With the latest model, it is possible to select a time for how long the nebulization should last. The aerosol generator is also manufactured by Nebu-Tec itself. Everything comes from one source and can be constantly improved and coordinated.

The inhalation set SaHoMa®-II contains all products, except the inhalation solution, that your horse needs for an inhalation. You can get the inhalation solution either from your veterinarian if additional medication needs to be nebulized, or as a NaCl or brine solution.

What do you have to look out for when buying an inhalation device for horses?

Almost noiseless nebulization is important. If the inhalation device works quietly, this is more comfortable for your horse and causes less stress than loud devices. You should also pay attention to the particle size when nebulizing. Particles that are as small as possible should be produced. The combination of particle size and time is also important, because the smaller the particles should be, the longer the nebulization process takes. A good combination of both makes sense here.

Also make sure that the product is of good quality. All parts should be strong enough to withstand handling horses. Individual adjustment to the head and nostrils is also important so that the aerosols do not escape undesirably.

With the inhalation device from Nebu-Tec, the resistance when inhaling is also low. If the resistance is too high, inhaling becomes more difficult. This is not the case with the SaHoMa®-II inhaler for horses through the membrane. This also prevents the horse from breathing in dusty outside air or escaping aerosols.
