In English dressage or show jumping, riding boots are part of the basic equipment. Also Riding ankle boots with matching Chaps are often used, especially in summer or with children. Most riding boots are made of cowhide and last a very long time with good care.
The dressage boot should make a long, slim leg and allow particularly good contact with the horse. The inside of the boot is therefore a little thinner and softer. The outside of the dressage boot is a little thicker and above all drawn higher. The so-called dressage bow extends beyond the knee joint and additionally stabilizes the lower leg. Many dressage arcs can be customized. Ladies like to have the dressage bow decorated with rhinestones, made of lacquer or crocodile imitation. That makes the boot particularly elegant. Since long-legged riders are used in dressage, the dressage boot is longer than a jumping boot and ends only about one to two fingers' widths below the knee joint. In classic boots for dressage, the heel is also heavily reinforced. This ensures a better hold of the foot. Even with dressage boots, there are now models with zippers or laces to make them easier to put on.
In contrast to the dressage boot, the show jumping boot is much more flexible. It is made of a softer material to allow more movement when riding. An elastic lacing area at the front offers even greater freedom of movement in the ankle. The boot is not cut as high as a dressage boot because the knee has to be bent more. If you do a lot of jumping, buy a show jumping boot, otherwise it can quickly become uncomfortable in the hollow of the knee with dressage boots. The outside of the boot is as high as the inside or only slightly raised. A cuff is often incorporated into the upper edge of the shaft to protect the leg. For a sportier look, many show jumping boots have a stepped toe cap.
The all-round riding boot or leisure boot offers the good freedom of movement of a jumping boot combined with the elegant look of a dressage boot. This boot has a zipper on the back or side so that the boot can be put on faster. Many leisure boots are made of less sensitive leather and are therefore not as expensive as classy dressage boots. The variety is great.
Classic riding boots are always black. Although they are spiced up here and there with subtle accents, one does not deviate from it, especially in dressage. In your free time, on the other hand, you can be a little braver. Many manufacturers therefore offer riding boots in brown or cognac, dark brown, gray or even blue. The most important thing in advance: Never care for your boots with leather oil, instead use a shoe polish that is turpentine-free. Turpentine damages the leather. This is how you proceed with cleaning and care:
After riding, you should definitely let your riding boots dry. This works best in a well-ventilated place at room temperature. Since moisture collects in the leather during training, it is necessary to dry it in order to avoid mold formation in the worst case. Never dry your boots on the heater or in the sun, as this will make the leather too dry and cracked.
Boot trees and boot bags are useful accessories for riding boots. The boot trees ensure that the boot does not lose its shape and that pressing folds form. The boot bag protects your riding boot from damage from other equestrian equipment in the closet and from dust and dirt.
If your boot is defective, have it repaired by a specialist. Likewise, if the sole of your riding boot has expired, take it to a specialist or ask the manufacturer for a repair. Shoemakers usually only reinforce the defective areas by gluing under a sole. These soles are usually not made for equestrian sports and do not offer optimal hold in the temple. In addition, bad work can cause the sole to come off and you can get caught. So rather rely on the handwork of an equestrian specialist.
