The use of a saddle pad makes sense if you want to further relieve your horse's back. Saddle pads use the material to absorb shocks from the rider and reduce the pressure on the horse's back. A saddle that does not fit correctly, for example in the development phase or in young horses, can be corrected by using a correction pad. There are gel pads that are slightly raised at the front or rear and thus align the saddle correctly again. Important when using a saddle pad: the chamber of the saddle must not be too narrow or press. So clarify the use with your saddler.
Especially in show jumping or endurance riding, the horse's back is particularly stressed. A relieving saddle pad is ideal here to protect your horse's back from pressure points or bumps. Even beginners who are not yet well balanced should use the saddle pad to avoid disturbing the horse's movement and creating unnecessary pressure. A saddle pad can of course also be used in dressage. Here you can often see saddle pads with lambskin edging. This protects the withers and the back particularly well against pressure and chafing.
Gel pads can have many functions. On the one hand, they take selective pressure off the horse's back very well. They also prevent the saddle from slipping. They are also available with elevations at the back, so-called back risers. Or with an elevation at the front, so-called front risers. These front risers relieve the trapezius muscle. Front risers and back risers also bring the saddle back into balance if the saddle's center of gravity is slightly off center. Money pads are also available with lambskin to prevent chafing.
