As the name suggests, fetlock boots prevent the fetlock heads from "stroking" against each other. This can be particularly useful for young, unbalanced horses. Fetlock boots also protect the fetlock heads of horses that step tightly or do lateral movements. Especially with shod horses you should pay attention to sufficient protection. Fetlock boots are a simple and quick way to prevent injuries. The difference between the caps and gaiters is clear: Fetlock boots are a lot shorter than gaiters. The caps are also available as an open variant, which only protects the inside of the fetlock head.
Here you will find an overview of the different types of fetlock boots. The sizes of fetlock boots are usually given as S, M, L or WB for horses and P for ponies. Use the size of hard-shell gaiters as a guide when choosing your size. If the selected size does not fit, you are of course welcome to send the products back to us (clean and undamaged) within the return period after trying them on.
You have certainly already seen and used simple fetlock boots. This simple variant consists of a hard plastic shell, which lies on the inside of the fetlock head and an encompassing neoprene webbing with Velcro. Due to the simple "construction" these fetlock boots for horses are often cheap and available in many different colors.
Closed fetlock boots not only protect the inside of the fetlock head, but also encompass the entire bondage head, much like a gaiter. Like boots, they are often made of plastic and neoprene or leather. Such a fetlock boot is useful for the terrain if you ride your horse through ground cover, or if your horse tends to "step away" with its hind legs and thus hits against rails or the edge of the hoof.
As with gaiters or bell boots, you can also get fetlock boots with a fur rim, or even a full fur lining. This can be made of lambskin or artificial fur and prevents chafing.
As with gaiters, fetlock boots are often harder Plastic shell and neoprene lining available. These products are very easy to care for because they can be hand washed at 30°C. Some fetlock boots even survive washing in the washing machine. Please note the washing instructions for the product. Plastic fetlock boots are available in many colors, but the most popular colors are still brown and black. fetlock boots off leather and imitation leather are not quite as common, but look nobler. Fetlock boots made of leather are particularly elegant in a set with the matching gaiters. The natural material is soft and cuddly and effectively protects the horse's leg from injuries. You should clean leather fetlock boots with a suitable leather care product.
Basically, you should of course have chosen the right size for your horse. The fetlock boot should fit snugly like gaiters, but not pinch off. Close the caps properly on the outside. If the clasps were on the inside, the clasps could snag and open. This would be very dangerous and could result in injury from tripping. Fetlock boots come with Velcro, rubber and metal button closures, or buckles. Make sure to close the fetlock boot tightly, but not with force. If you have chosen an anatomical fetlock boot, the shape must fit the fetlock head. The Carpal joint must remain free to ensure unrestricted movement. An easy way to put on fetlock boots is to put them on the leg slightly above the fetlock. Now slowly slide the fetlock boot down onto the fetlock until it nestles in the correct place.
Fetlock boots are generally permitted in WBO tests, except in Dressage Rider WB and Dressage WB. In the dressage rider LP class EM and dressage LP class E to S, no leg protection is generally permitted. Of course you can use fetlock boots and gaiters on the warm-up arena, but you have to take them off before entering the test. Only fetlock boots that have a smooth inside are allowed in Show Jumping LP, Free Jumping LP, and Fitness LP. So without fur or bulge. In jumping and cross-country tests, fetlock boots are of course allowed to protect the horse's legs from injuries. All regulations on gaiters and fetlock boots can be found in the current LPO.
A particularly popular brand is Veredus. The fetlock boots and gaiters from Veredus protect horses' legs very effectively with high-quality materials and innovative technologies.
Veredus offers various series of fetlock boots and gaiter sets. You can choose between a Velcro or rivet closure. The fetlock Veredus per jump is an impact-resistant ankle protection with an anatomically shaped polyurethane shell and a neoprene inner lining. It is available in brown or black and encloses the entire fetlock head. The variant Veredus Pro Jump Save the Sheep fetlock boot has an inner lining made of artificial lambskin. This technical fabric is easy to wash and dries quickly. The wide and fluffy mesh allows Sand escape more easily, thereby avoiding friction. This protects your horse's legs.
A technically more sophisticated version is the Veredus Carbon Gel Vento fetlock boot. This is of course also available as a matching gaiter. This fetlock boot has double ventilation through a micro-perforated neoprene AEROX and 3DMesh-Tissue guaranteed. In addition, a combination of carbon and Nitrexgel absorbs shocks effectively. This fetlock boots is also in brown and black and with the artificial lambskin from the Save the sheep Series available.
More fetlock boots series from Veredus make Young Jump Vento, Grand Slam Carbon Gel, the fetlock boot Grand Prix and the fetlock fetlock Olympus.
Just as popular as Veredus are fetlock boots from Eskadron. These are always available in the same color as the gaiters. Eskadron Fetlock boots consist mostly of a hard plastic shell and an easy-care neoprene lining.
Eskadron HO Air Easy fetlock boots offer a dynamic look, high security and very good ventilation. The fetlock boot consists of an additional reinforced TPE outer shell in the rear area and a neoprene inner lining with air holes. Mesh-protected air channels in the outer shell also ensure ideal air circulation. The special click closure is reminiscent of closures on inline skates and enables quick and easy closure, as well as individual adjustment to the horse's leg.
Eskadron also offers fetlock boots and gaiters in pony sizes.
