Are stable gaiters useful for horses?

Before you buy, ask yourself why you want to use stable boots. Is your horse particularly restless when it has to be in the box? Is he recovering from an injury, or has legs that have become swollen from standing? Stable boots can help with all of these problems. However, you should note that horses' legs are not permanently bandaged or protected by stable gaiters. Because this can lead to your horse becoming careless. In the worst case, skin irritation can result if the stable boots and horse's leg are not properly cleaned.

If your horse is shod, stable gaiters can be useful. Young horses in particular are cocky and careless when getting up in the box. Even if shod horses don't rest in their stalls, they can become restless and injure themselves dangerously. In this case it makes sense to intervene with stable bandages.

Therapeutic stable gaiters can also have a supportive effect on tarnished legs and tendon damage. These are coated on the inside with ceramic particles. These particles reflect body heat and thus support blood circulation. If you have tendon damage, talk to your vet beforehand to find out whether it makes sense to use it in your specific case. In the case of acute inflammation, cooling gaiters such as Horseware ice vibe make sense. In any case, you should clarify the cause of swollen or warm legs with a veterinarian. Especially if your horse does not run in rhythm or is even lame.

If your horse is in an open stable, it does not necessarily make sense to wear stable gaiters. Because you can usually not control whether they get wet. Stable boots are usually not weatherproof and so quickly soak up water. Skin irritation or hypothermia of the tendons can occur if your horse has to stand for a long time with wet stable gaiters.

Are stable gaiters breathable?

Stable boots must be breathable. When the leg is "wrapped" for a long time, heat builds up. Although it is good in some cases if the leg is warmed up, heat build-up should definitely not occur. So make sure that your horse feels comfortable with the stable gaiters and check from time to time whether the leg is too warm or even damp. Then you should definitely remove and change the stable boots.

What should I look out for when buying stable boots?

When purchasing stable boots, make sure they are the correct size. Since horse legs differ from breed to breed, manufacturers offer stable boots in different sizes. So you can buy suitable stable boots for your pony, a thoroughbred, a warmblood or a draft horse. These differ in both length and girth.

Stable boots should be neither too loose nor too tight. If they are too loose, they can slip and your horse may trip and injure himself. If they are too tight, blood and lymph flow can be cut off. Also, the joints must not be constricted, as this will hinder movement. You can securely close the stable gaiters with the attached Velcro fasteners.

Also, make sure that you buy the stable boots according to the needs of your horse or pony. So you have the choice between protective protectors and warming or cooling stable gaiters.
