In the case of a saddle with a short saddle flap and therefore short girth straps, only a long girth can be used. This affects both jumping saddles and saddles for eventing. Long belts are available from a length of 100 cm up to a length of 150 cm. Longer straps are rather rare. So that you can find the right girth for your horse and your saddle, lepona.de offers you a large selection of different variants.
Admittedly, the choice of shape is not quite as large for long girths as it is for short girths. As a rule, long girths are straight or have an anatomical shape. Even with a long girth, it is important that the horse has a lot of freedom of movement in the elbow area. With a long belt, however, you don't have to worry about the belt buckles. These lie under the short flap of the saddle and are well padded on both sides. Many long harnesses also have a wide chest plate so that the pressure on the sternum is evenly distributed. This is very comfortable for many horses.
The choice of materials is also large for long belts. However, there is the most selection for leather long belts. In show jumping, girths must be hard-wearing and durable. A well-cared-for long belt made of leather has these properties. But belts made of neoprene, memory foam, artificial leather or long belts with lambskin are also represented in this category.
Of course, it would be better if horses didn't have to wear seat belts in the first place. But sometimes a horse's experience of girthing is uncomfortable. Seat belt constraint is caused by tightening the seat belt too quickly and too tightly. A first step can be to choose a long belt with fur, as you cannot strap it on so tightly. You should be careful with straps that are too elastic. There is a risk of over tightening. In the end, only a lot of patience with your horse will help. Fasten girths gradually, choose girths that are comfortable for the horse. Some horses prefer leather to memory foam, or prefer soft girths like neoprene or gel. Pay attention to the horse's signs as to whether it feels comfortable with the chosen girth.
